Rowen Promoted to Chicago, Baxter Designated for Assignment

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 29, 2015) - The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Ben Rowen from Triple-A Iowa and designated infielder/outfielder Mike Baxter for assignment.

Rowen, 26, joined the I-Cubs after signed a minor league contract with Chicago on July 4. In eight appearances, he is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0ER/9.1IP) for Iowa. He has struck out six and walked just one.

The right-hander began the season with the Baltimore Orioles organization, where he was a combined 2-0 with a 2.41 ERA (10ER/37.1IP) in 26 games between Triple-A Norfolk and Double-A Bowie. He opted out of his contract on July 1 before signing with Chicago.

Rowen was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 22nd round of the 2010 June draft out of Virginia Tech. He has eight games of major league experience under his belt with Texas in 2014, going 0-0 with a 4.15 ERA (4ER/8.2IP) and seven strikeouts.

Baxter, 30, batted .246 (14-for-57) with one double and two RBI in 34 games with Chicago this season. He hit .300 (39-for-130) with 11 RBI in 44 games with Iowa.

With these moves, Iowa's active roster is at 23 players plus two players on the disabled list and two players on major league rehab assignment.
