Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, July 29, 2015 - The consensus top prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates system and MLB.com's No. 16 overall farmhand Tyler Glasnow (GLASS-now) is scheduled to make his highly-anticipated Triple-A debut for the Indianapolis Indians on Saturday, Aug. 1. The right-hander is slated as the Tribe's probable starting pitcher at Victory Field against the Charlotte Knights at 7:05 p.m.
Glasnow, 21, was selected by the Pirates in the fifth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. He was named Pittsburgh's Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2013 and 2014, MiLB.com and the Florida State League's Pitcher of the Year in 2014 and has been selected to three Minor League All-Star teams.
A native of Newhall, California, Glasnow made his professional debut in 2012, splitting time between the GCL Pirates and Short-Season State College Spikes. He then went 9-3 and ranked first in the South Atlantic League and fourth in all of Minor League Baseball with 164 strikeouts with Lo-A West Virginia in 2013, breaking the club's previous strikeout record by 30 total whiffs.
Glasnow won his second consecutive award as the Pirates' top Minor League pitcher following a dominant campaign for Hi-A Bradenton in 2014. That season, he led the Minors in opponents' batting average (.174), ranked third in ERA (1.74), and dating to his debut on April 25, concluded the year with the most strikeouts in MiLB (157) over 23 starts with the Marauders.
At the start of this season, Baseball America ranked Glasnow's fastball as the best among all Pittsburgh Minor Leaguers. He posted a 5-3 record with a 2.43 ERA during his first action at the Double-A level, and earned a Triple-A promotion to Indianapolis with wins in three of his last four starts and double-digit strikeouts in each of his last two outings.
Overall, Glasnow is 26-15 with a 2.05 ERA and 453 strikeouts over 73 Minor League appearances. He is scheduled to make his Triple-A debut against Charlotte's right-hander Scott Carroll (4-2, 2.45 ERA).
Glasnow's older brother, Ted, was a decathlete at Notre Dame in 2014 and is currently training for the Olympics.
