Warriors Battle Back for 3-2 Shootout Win

October 30, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release

Greenville, SC - Kyle Jean scored the game-tying goal with just over four minutes to play in the third period and Jeff Malcolm (3-1-0-0) stopped four of five shots in a shootout as the Greenville Road Warriors (3-2-0-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, beat the South Carolina Stingrays 3-2 on SANDLAPPER Securities Rink at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

The win is Greenville's third straight overall and second in a row over South Carolina (1-3-0-1).

Jean's tying goal, his second of the season, came after he snuck into the slot and directed a shot over the glove of South Carolina goaltender Brandon Anderson at 15:57 of the third.

Former Road Warrior Andrew Rowe opened the scoring at 4:28 of the first when he sent a wrist shot past Malcolm's glove side during a 2-on-1 rush, which glanced off the post and into the net.

Chad Nehring had Greenville's best scoring chance of the opening frame at the 12:00 mark. Alone in front, Nehring shot a one-timer low to the glove side of Anderson, but the Stingray's goaltender snagged the wrister.

South Carolina earned a two-goal lead on another odd-man rush when Cory Kane slipped the puck under Malcolm at the 7:33 mark of the second period. It was Kane's first professional goal.

The Road Warriors halved the deficit at 14:19 of the second when Anderson kicked a shot from Chris McCarthy toward the right point, where Jacob Johnston crept in and knocked the rebound home for his first goal of the year.

After Jean evened the game late in the third, both teams earned chances in overtime but came up empty. In the ensuing five-round shootout, McCarthy and Vinny Saponari scored for Greenville, while Wayne Simpson notched South Carolina's only tally.

The Road Warriors finished the game 0-for-2 on the power play, but remained perfect on the penalty kill by going 5-for-5. Greenville is now 22-for-22 on the penalty kill this season.

The Stingrays outshot the Road Warriors 38-23, while Anderson (0-1-0-0) made 21 saves and suffered the loss in his season debut.

The Road Warriors return to the ice tomorrow for a 7:05 p.m. puck drop against the South Carolina Stingrays in Charleston. The next home game is Monday, Nov. 10 at 7:00 p.m. against the Stingrays.
