Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans scored twice in a span of 59 seconds, including the eventual game-winner from newcomer Zac Dalpe with 1:20 remaining in regulation, as the Amerks overcame a late third-period deficit to steal a 3-2 win over the visiting Rockford IceHogs Wednesday night at The Blue Cross Arena.

Tim Schaller scored two goals, including the game-tying goal with 2:19 left in regulation to pace Rochester, and Nathan Lieuwen stopped 21 shots for his third win of the young season. Phil Varone and Chad Ruhwedel each added an assist for the Amerks to extend their scoring streaks to four games.

Teuvo Teravainen and Mark McNeill each scored for the IceHogs, while former Amerk Michael Leighton denied 30 shots in his return to Rochester.

Rockford opened the scoring on the power-play 5:35 into the second period when Teravainen put a shot just inside the far post to put the IceHogs ahead 1-0.

A strong defensive play from William Carrier forced a turnover at the Rochester blueline, and to prevent a breakaway attempt, Peter Regin hauled down Carrier and earned a trip to the penalty box. On the ensuing power-play opportunity, Joel Armia found Schaller with a cross-ice pass and Schaller sliced his way to the net before slipping a backhand shot through Leighton's legs to tie the score 1-1.

Momentum seemed to swing Rochester's way with 5:50 remaining in the third period after Rockford's Pierre-Cedric Labrie was penalized for delay of game. However, McNeill would jump on a loose puck in the neutral zone and convert on a shorthanded breakaway to put the IceHogs ahead 2-1 with 5:02 left in regulation.

On a delayed penalty, the Amerks held possession for nearly 30 seconds before Schaller controlled the puck along the wall. With a screen in front, Schaller's shot snuck through Leighton's arm to tie the score 2-2 with 2:19 left on the clock. On Schaller's next shift, the second-year forward crashed the net and drew a penalty on Dennis Rasmussen with 1:30 remaining in the game.

As the Amerks held possession in Rockford's zone, Varone took a shot from the top of the circle with Dalpe parked in front of the net. Leighton kicked out the rebound right to Dalpe, who whirled around and buried the game-deciding tally with 1:20 left.

The IceHogs pulled Leighton to gain the extra attacker with a minute left, but Lieuwen kept everything in front of him to preserve Rochester's third win of the season.

The Amerks remain at home on Friday, Oct. 24 when they host the Adirondack Flames in the first leg of a home-and-home series at The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. contest will be the second of 12 meetings between the new intrastate rivals this season and will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester.
