Steven Moya Named Eastern League Most Valuable Player

(Erie, PA) - The Erie SeaWolves, in collaboration with the Eastern League of Professional Baseball, are pleased to announce that right fielder Steven Moya has been named the 2014 Eastern League Most Valuable Player. Moya is the first SeaWolves player to be named the league's MVP since the SeaWolves entered the Eastern League in 1999.

Moya is batting .271 (137-for-505 with 32 doubles, three triples, 34 home runs, 12 RBI, 78 runs scored, 15 stolen bases, a .549 slugging percentage and a .299 on-base percentage in 130 games this season.

The 23-year old slugger has rewritten the Erie record books setting a new single-season mark for total bases (277) while tying the single-season record for home runs (34) and RBI (102). Moya currently leads all Eastern League hitters in home runs (34), RBI (102), slugging percentage (.549), total bases (277) and extra base hits (69). He is also among the league leaders in doubles (32 - 2nd), runs scored (78 - 4th), hits (137 - 4th) and OPS (.847 - 5th). Steven is also tied for 10th in the league with eight outfield assists this season and has made just three errors while appearing in 128 games in right field.

Moya, a native of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, was impressive during the month of July when he was named Eastern League Player of the Month after hitting .304 with 10 home runs, 33 RBI and 20 runs scored in 29 games played. He also participated in the Eastern League All-Star Game in Altoona in July and was the winner of the MiLB.com Top Star Award as the MVP of the game after hitting a game-winning grand slam for the Western Division in a 5-2 win. Steven was also a member of the World Team at the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game in Minnesota.

Moya was signed by the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on October 1, 2008. He was also recently selected to the 2014 Eastern League season-ending All-Star Team. He was selected by Baseball America as the "Best Power Prospect" in the league this season in their annual "Best Tools" voting.

Moya will be recognized on the field prior to tonight's regular season home finale with the Bowie Baysox . The pregame ceremony will take place at approximately 6:40 p.m. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. SeaWolves players Jamie Johnson and Dean Green will also receive honors before the game. Johnson will be recognized for setting SeaWolves franchise records for walks (302) and stolen bases (61) in a career. Dean Green will be recognized for winning the Edinboro University Excellent Play of the Year for his game-winning, three-run home run on August 16 against Altoona.

Tonight is Fan Appreciation Night. Fans in attendance have the chance to win over $1,000 in prizes including gift cards and autographed items. The team is also holding a "Shirt Off Our Back" jersey auction. Fans will have the opportunity to bid on game-worn 20th season commemorative black jerseys through the 6th inning. Winning bidders will be presented their jersey on the field following the game.
