Peoria Chiefs News Release

BELOIT, WI- The Peoria Chiefs scored two unearned runs in the top of the 10th inning to beat the Beloit Snappers 6-4 Tuesday night in game one of a pivotal six-game roadtrip. The win moves the Chiefs to 20-16 in the second half and 58-48 overall while the Snappers fall to 11-25 and 41-65.

Beloit took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Phil Pohl hit his fifth home run of the season with one out. The homer was the first hit allowed by Chiefs starter Alex Reyes who was facing the Snappers for the fourth time in 2014.

The Chiefs bounced back in the third inning as Richy Pedroza singled off Matt Stalcup. With two outs, CJ McElroy Jr. doubled to center to tie the game as Pedroza scored without a throw. Stalcup got out of the inning as first baseman BA Vollmuth made a diving catch of a Juan Herrera foul ball on the warning track down the first base line.

The Chiefs took the lead in the fourth with more two-out hits. Ronald Castillo doubled off the top of the wall, just over the glove of rightfielder Tyler Marincov. Rowan Wick pulled a double down the first-base line to score Castillo for a 2-1 lead.

Reyes ran into trouble in the fourth after a line drive hit him and rolled to first base for the first out. Reyes was cleared to stay in the game but walked the next two batters and gave up a soft line-drive single to left that loaded the bases. Brandon Cogswell blooped a single over the head of Pedroza at second base to tie the game. With the bases still loaded, Reyes struck out the next two batters to keep the game tied.

The Chiefs knocked Stalcup from the game in the fifth and regained the lead. Vaughn Bryan singled with one out and McElroy beat out an infield single to put two on for Herrera. The Chiefs All-Star shortstop lined a double over the head of BJ Boyd in center to score both Bryan and McElroy for a 4-2 Chiefs lead.

Beloit ended the night for Reyes early in the fifth. Matt Chapman led off with a single and scored on a double by Marincov to cut the Chiefs lead to 4-3. Zach Loraine took over for Reyes and stranded Marincov at third with a wild pitch and three straight outs.

The game stayed 4-3 into the seventh as Loraine retired the first eight batters he faced and Beloit reliever Tyler Vail matched him out for out. But with two outs in the seventh, Marincov cranked a 2-0 pitch out of the stadium to center field to tie the game 4-4.

Neither team scored until the 10th inning as Kevin Herget for the Chiefs and Sam Roberts for the Snappers through two perfect innings. With two outs in the top of the 10th, McElroy reached on a throwing error by Chapman at third base and moved to second on a wild pitch. Herrera again came through with a clutch hit as he doubled to center for a 5-4 Chiefs lead. Roberts hit Carson Kelly and gave way to Sam Bragg with two on and two out. Justin Ringo singled to center to score Herrera for a 6-4 lead and Josh Lucas nailed down the save in the bottom of the inning.

Reyes allowed three runs on six hits over four innings with four walks and five strikeouts in the no-decision. Loraine allowed one run on one hit over 2 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Herget (5-3) retired all seven batters he faced with three strikeouts. Lucas hit a batter and struck out a batter in his hitless inning to record his second save.
