Aces five-goal rout puts Las Vegas on the brink of elimination

LAS VEGAS - Peter Sivak and Nick Mazzolini each racked up three points and the Alaska Aces scored a pair of shorthanded goals to cruise to a 5-1 victory over the Las Vegas Wranglers, at Orleans Arena in Game 3 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The Aces, putting Las Vegas on the brink of elimination, earned their first 3-0 series lead since the 2011 Conference Finals at Victoria and earned two goals in the first minute of play in the first and third periods. Gerald Coleman registered 17 stops while Sean Curry and Drew MacKenzie (1g-1a) were a combined +8 on the blueline.

Sivak finished Mazzolini's backdoor feed at the right post for a 1-0 lead just 14 seconds into the game, and the same duo combined for a shorthanded goal and 2-0 lead at 6:52. Sivak fed Mazzolini with a cross-ice pass to the left circle and Mazzolini hammered a slap shot past Travis Fullerton for the Aces first shorthanded goal of the postseason.

Shawn Skelly drew the Wranglers to within a goal, on the power play with a deflection at the net from Greg Coburn's point shot at 6:11, but Sivak responded with his second goal of the game and 3-1 lead at 8:07 when he capitalized of Eddie DelGrosso's turnover and beat Fullerton to the blocker with the second shorthanded goal of the night and 3-1 lead.

Drew MacKenzie boosted the Aces lead to 4-1 on a power play goal just 31 seconds in, converting Brendan Connolly's backdoor feed at the left post. Brett Findlay then iced Las Vegas with his first goal of the series at 9:37, burying a wrister from the slot for a 5-1 lead.

Fullerton took the loss with 33 stops.

NOTES: The Aces scratched Brad Richard, Andy Taranto and Ross Ring-Jarvi ... the Aces improved to 14-12, lifetime in Game 3 situations and have outshot the Wranglers, 115-57 in the series (13-3 in scoring) ... Mazzolini has nine points in three postseason games to lead the Aces.

The Aces will aim to close the series on Friday in Game 4, starting at 6:05 p.m. (KFQD) from Orleans Arena.
